Five Friends. One Thanksgiving. A Mission That Wouldn't Let Go.

How a simple act of service became Seed to Serve LA.

How It Started

It all started last Thanksgiving. A few of us came together to give back by cooking healthy meals for families facing housing instability. We simply felt grateful for the food on our table and a roof over our heads, and we believed it was our responsibility to show up for our neighbors who didn't have that same stability.

We gathered at Kole's house, cooked for hours, and then drove out to distribute meals from the back of our cars, opening our trunks and handing food directly to families in need. That day, we served over 50 families. The feeling was unlike anything we'd ever experienced — real connection, real purpose, and a reminder of how much a warm, nourishing meal can mean. We knew we couldn't stop there.

So we did it again at Christmas, this time with a little more preparation. Along with meals, we brought toys, clothes, and blankets. Once again, the impact was undeniable. And in the middle of it all, we watched something beautiful happen: families and children started connecting over a simple game of soccer in the parking lot, laughing, sharing, and teaming up like they'd known each other forever.

Seeing that game in the parking lot made it clear to us that nourishment is so much more than just a meal. It sparked another idea — what if we created community soccer field spaces for the children? That's the heart of Seed to Serve LA.

The Families No One Sees

Across Southern California, thousands of families live in unstable housing. They're navigating housing voucher programs that often fall short, and when vouchers can't be used, families are left in precarious situations, facing daily uncertainty.

These families have a roof over their heads, but no kitchen to cook in. A microwave and a mini-fridge are all they have.

They don't fit the typical image of homelessness. They're working parents, children going to school, people doing everything they can to stay afloat. But without a kitchen, they can't prepare the meals their families need.

When a family receives groceries from a food pantry but has no stove, no oven, and no counter space — those groceries don't become meals.

That's exactly where Seed to Serve LA steps in. We don't replace food pantries — we fill the gap they can't.
