Before a produce giveaway we sort everything that has been donated and pack it into bags by hand, so each one gets looked at before it goes out. Usually the evening before the event. This is the shift that decides whether a family gets a sack of whatever came off the truck or a bag somebody actually chose.
On the day, at either kind of event. At a produce giveaway you hand bags to families and help them to their cars. At a cooked event you plate meals and serve them. Either way this is the part where you meet the people we are doing it for, and it is the job most volunteers come back for.
For our cooked events we prep and cook from scratch in a partner kitchen. Real ingredients, no seed oils, and we make everything ourselves. No professional experience needed; there is always someone showing you what to do.
There is more going on than these three: setup and pack down, driving and pickups, photography, translation. Tell us on the volunteer form what you would rather do. Volunteers 18 and over can sign up directly, and volunteers under 18 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Some events add a short waiver or a partner registration step, and we will tell you before the day when they do.
